CKHS PTSA Programs

CK Cares

CK Cares is PTSA program established in 2002 to assist students with the purchase of school related items that would otherwise create a financial hardship for the student. Requests for assistance can be made to the Counseling Office. All requests are kept confidential and remain anonymous to the PTSA Board. Donations are tax-deductible and deeply appreciated as this is a self-supporting program.

How to Help

  • Donations payable to CKHS PTSA/CK Cares may be brought or sent to:

  • Businesses interested in making in-kind donations should contact CKHS PTSA first.
  • Bring your "experienced" (i.e. gently used) CKJH clothing to either CKHS or CKJH for a joint PTSA Cares program.

Reflections

The Reflections Program is a National PTA and Washington State PTA cultural arts competition. The purpose of this program is to provide an opportunity for students to use their creative talents by expressing themselves through their own original works. Each year students are challenged to create art that supports a specific theme. Entries are accepted in 6 arts areas: Literature, Music Composition, Photography, Visual Arts, Film/Video and Choreography/Dance. The contest is held at the local unit level in the fall and qualifying entries advance to the Council level, and then the state and national levels.

Testing Breakfast

State mandated tests (HSPE) are taken by hundreds of CKHS students in the spring. Research has shown that students who have had breakfast perform significantly better on such assessments. Based on this research, CKHS PTSA offers breakfast and healthy snack items before school to students taking part in HSPE. Testing Breakfast is a meant to not only to underscore the importance of these tests, but to support students and remind them that their community supports their efforts.

Golden Acorn Award

The Golden Acorn Award is part of a statewide volunteer recognition program, established in 1937 by the Washington State PTA. Over 1000 individuals are honored annually. Each year CKHS PTSA has the opportunity to recognize individuals who have demonstrated outstanding service to our students and our school community with a Golden Acorn award. This award honors individuals whose service exceeds that which is recognized as part of person’s responsibilities, duties of office, or job. Written recommendations are requested from PTSA members and reviewed by the Golden Acorn committee. In addition, the committee may honor someone as an Outstanding Educator or Outstanding Advocate. Recipients from throughout the school district are honored at the Founder’s Day Banquet. The PTSA makes a contribution to the Washington State PTA scholarship fund, in each recipient’s name; this fund awards approximately $66,000 in scholarships for post-secondary education, to graduating HS students annually.

Scholarships

Every year the CKHS PTSA is proud to present scholarship(s) to one or more graduating CKHS students who plan on furthering their education through study at a college or vocational school during the next school year. This scholarship recognizes student(s) who are making a difference in their school an/or community. An application, transcript and essay are required. There is no discrimination and judging is done with names removed, by an independent panel of judges.

Staff Appreciation

CKHS PTSA recognizes and appreciates the efforts of all CKHS employees to create a positive learning environment for students and Staff Appreciation activities are intended for all staff. Activities are determined by the PTSA Board and Staff Appreciation committee and may vary each year. Staff members may find small surprises in their mailboxes or treats in the staff lounges. Recognizing that it can be hard for staff members to go home and have dinner before Open House, CKHS PTSA has a tradition of providing a homemade soup supper that night. Wellness Kits, which include tissues and hand sanitizer are provided to all classrooms and offices during the cold and flu season. Every spring the PTSA coordinates activities for a Staff Appreciation Week. New ideas are always welcome.
